Chaperone Information

The CIMI Tall Ship Expeditions (CTSE) program is educational in focus. Although we strive to make them fun and interactive, this is not done at the expense of the learning environment. CTSE Instructors have at least a BS or BA degree and her/his energies are directed toward program activities. They do not fulfill the role of a 'counselor' by supervising students during their free time, at meals or in the living quarters. Participating adults supervise students during these times.

We respect and encourage the adults who choose to participate with their school, group and/or child. Our program would not function at the level it does without their active involvement. We believe that there are many rewards, both personal and group related, which will result from their efforts.

Chaperones should come prepared to participate in program activities, including snorkeling, hiking, and possibly kayaking. This is an expectation of our program. Chaperones will also assist in the control, discipline and overall safety of the students.

CTSE is not logistically in a position to accommodate 'free agents', individuals who would like to do their own thing while on board. Examples include going off by oneself to explore other aspects of the program or island. Although adults are here to support the schools trip, individuals have arrived, on occasion, prepared to entertain themselves. We hope to avoid any disappointment by providing an overview in this syllabus of adult responsibilities and procedures which will influence your CIMI Tall Ship Expedition.

Role of Chaperones

Participate - Be an active part of program, including: sailing, pride stations, snorkeling, hiking, stations under sail, and kayaking - This sets the appropriate example for the students and provides support for the instructor. Our programs depend on your involvement and assistance. We will give you specific instructions on what we would like you to do for every activity.

Encourage - Students will be experiencing many things for the first time on their expedition. Your encouragement can help them get over their fear of the unknown.

Supervise - During program – the instructor’s energy should go into teaching, not disciplining. Keep students quiet, and focused on the instruction. Comfort and attend to any seasick students. Help students get necessary first aid items and report any accidents to Director.

During Pride Stations – School chaperones are in charge of pride stations. Please make sure that every student has a job and is working to keep the SSV TOLE MOUR in “ship shape”. Direct them as needed and perform quality control.

In The Living Quarters
• Sleep in the living spaces with students
• Supervise the living quarters
• Help the students dress and pack appropriately for shore excursions
• Keep males and females separated in the living quarters.
• Make sure students know which bunks are occupied by adults in case a problem arises during the night
• Keep food and drinks out of below deck areas
• Curtail rough horseplay
• Enforce quiet hours 9:30pm – 6:30 am (Our program is energy intensive – everyone will need and want their sleep)
• Whenever students are gathered in the salon there must be 1 chaperone present
• If students are sleeping on deck, 1 chaperone must also sleep on deck.

During Free Time - Students are given free time 2-3 times a day after their pride stations are completed. This is an important part of their day. It allows them to process information and rest up before the next activity. CIMI staff use this time to prepare programs for later in the day. School chaperones are in charge of ensuring conduct is within the boundaries of the ship’s rules at these times.

Chaperones Support the Program in the Following Ways
• Engage in hiking, tidepooling or water activities only with CIMI supervision.
• Comply with all instructions of the CIMI staff.
• Be courteous to the CIMI staff and encourage it in the students.
• Keep students out of restricted areas.
• Keep noise to an acceptable level.
• Be an active part of sail handling and build student teamwork
• Curb general horseplay
• Be an active leader during Pride Stations.
• Be on time to all program sessions and be ready for meal times.
• Enforce ship quiet hours: 9:30pm. – 6:30am
• Try something new.
• Have as much fun as the kids and instructors!
