Sail Training

During the voyage, campers will be trained extensively in sailing the Tole Mour. Each day they sail the ship to a different destination and receive instruction during “ship operations” class that is designed to increase their level of proficiency in seagoing skills. This sail training instruction is aligned with the guidelines set out by the American Sail Training Association and will be taught at the appropriate level for the age of the campers and length of the trip. Sail training goals are set so that every campers remains challenged and engaged.

Campers will be given more responsibility each day during the expedition so that they can demonstrate their knowledge and build confidence in themselves as sailors. Each camper will have a chance to take the helm at some point in the trip and steer the ship under the supervision of one of the ship’s officers. They will also learn how to set the sails, which includes using safe line handling and correct terminology. Campers will handle lines for maneuvering the ship and will also be in charge of striking and furling sails when sailing is done for the day. The Tole Mour crew will prepare the campers for a “Challenge Sail” on the last day, when the campers will set all of the sails on their own while crew supervise. The campers will then safely navigate the ship back to Long Beach.

The crew will always take the time to explain the theories and techniques underlying the operation of the Tole Mour. To this end, we offer a variety of sailing oriented lessons designed to broaden each camper’s understanding of sailing. Lessons on physics of sailing, navigation, marlinspike seamanship, and language of the sea are offered in addition to ship operations. Afternoons dedicated solely to advanced sailing maneuvers further enrich the sail training experience.
